Ah, the first full week of the year. Are we still saying 'happy New Year"? Not sure. With the turn of the calendar brings in a fresh wave of goals for the year, or resolutions, as they are so nicely termed. When I work with clients on their goals/resolutions/desires/life dreams (?) there is one skill that we work on. Consistency. No matter what your goal is, you must be consistent in working towards that goal. Whether it be strength, mobility, general health, weight loss, anything....you have to have strategies to stay consistent. Here are the 3 strategies from 3 clients that are absolutely CRUSHING their goals right now. Jacob was struggling to get to the gym consistently 3 times a week. The night before he pulls out his gym clothes, packs his bag, and prepares a snack to eat after work. Rather than do this the morning of (when he's rushed to get out the door...) by doing it the night before he is starting to think about the gym. He's laying down the mentality that this is something that he is going to do. He's making time for it (instead of finding time) and his actions make him ready to kick ass. The takeaway- utilize 'triggers' that start to tell your brain that this is something we are going to do. Pack the back, get the gym shoes, get the snack ready. Do the little tasks that lead up to the big task. Sara has been splitting her workouts in to smaller workouts that she can do throughout the day. You see. Sara is SUPER active, has a high stress job, and two young kids. Sometimes she can get the full 40 minute workout in, but often times something comes up or interrupts and it's easier to get in 20 minute workouts either twice a day (during lunch, before or after work) or just accomplish these 20 minute workouts throughout the week. The takeaway- short workouts can be effective workouts. The length of the workout does not dictate success! My guy Tom said this in his first check-in with me and it's really hit home ever since. Toms key to consistency is to turn his brain off, eliminate all decision fatigue, and just 'go and do'. Literally, the best way to explain it. If you're showing up to the gym and piecing together a workout there is a good chance you might be feeling like you're spinning your wheels. Having a plan helps. Making sure that plan matches your work/life schedule is critical for consistency. Nothing is more unmotivating than a workout program you can't do OR keep up with. Regardless of what your goals are for 2025, I hope you work to find a consistency strategy that helps clear the way to your success. I hope these short stories from Jacob, Sara, and Tom are helpful in turning the wheels for your own strategies. It's here! I'm very excited to share that Dumbbell Decathlon, my 10-week dumbbell workout program, is HERE! This program took over 3 months and close to 60 hours to build from start to finish. I told myself that if I ever produced a standalone workout program it would have to be something that 1) I am proud of AND 2) be a workout program that I would do myself. I think I hit the nail square on the head! More about Dumbbell Decathlon... 4 workouts each week. 2 Total body, 1 upper body, and 1...
Listen, I just want you to love planks the way I love planks. I spent the vast majority of 2024 performing long duration planks. It started as a "I can't prove this but..." because I was having SO much success in relieving my lower back pain and quickly turned in to me diving head first down the plank/pain rabbit hole. If you throw a simple "Back Pain and Planks" search in to Google or Google Scholar, you'll find plenty of support for the good 'ole plank. If you want the TL:DR, just keep...
The people have spoken. So here I am writing it. The 'Naughty or Nice List' is back...featuring Nutrition this week! Before I get in to it, whatever holiday you celebrate this season I hope you enjoyed the heck out of it. Okay. Naughty nutrition in 2024. Lets kick this list off 1) Protein Bars. 24 year old me would be absolutely shocked to see protein bars on the naughty list. Here's the thing, over the last 3 or so years, companies have made a switch to making their protein bars lower in...
